Product Description

Hold on tight!

“Always Cedar Point, a Memoir of the Midway” gives the reader an insider’s view of the operations of the world’s greatest amusement park, Cedar Point.  From a summer as a 20-year old ride operator on the Frontier Lift to becoming the park’s general manager 35 years later, John Hildebrandt brings the reader inside the fascinating world of what it takes to market and operate a destination built for fun.

Hildebrandt walked the midway every day for 40 seasons, talking to guests and employee. He collected a lifetime of stories. There is humor, history, disappointment, thrills, and excitement in his storytelling. And there are memorable people as well. Cedar Point truly is The Amazement Park.

The focus of the book is Hildebrandt’s relationship with the park’s most iconic attractions—its legendary collection of world class roller coasters—including Millennium Force, Top Thrill Dragster, Magnum, Maverick, Corkscrew, GateKeeper (to name just a few). As marketing vice president, it was Hildebrandt’s job to introduce these magnificent scream machines to the world. From how the coasters were named to thrilling first rides to the creation of memorable advertising campaigns, Hildebrandt gives the reader a unique perspective, including lessons learned.

“Always Cedar Point” is one of the best books yet written about life inside an amusement park. Part memoir, part history, part business brief, part autobiography, “Always Cedar Point” is also Hildebrandt’s love poem to a remarkable place, a nearly 150-year old amusement park and resort in Sandusky Ohio on the shores of Lake Erie.

Cedar Point has been a summer ritual for millions of people for more than a century, and while it continues to change, it remains a fixture in the lives of families all over the Midwest. Its early history is well documented in Queen of American Watering Places, but it''s really the last 40 years that define the place we love. John captures that history perfectly from an inside perspective. The anecdotes of the personalities are well drawn and interesting. There''s enough detail there for the super-fan or someone casually interested in the park''s history. The volume of change over the decades is staggering, and it''s a treat to see it from the perspective of someone who was there for all of it.

I just got the book, Always Cedar Point, by H. John Hildebrandt, and I am not disappointed. Quickly thumbing through the pages ... oh, the MEMORIES that come back.

I grew up in Ohio, about 30 miles south of the park. Our annual vacation from the time I was 8 years old was to Sandusky, to spend the day at Cedar Point. It was the highlight of Summer.

1977 found me employed as a Ticket Taker, Front Gate. Best job, ever. Loved interacting with the guests and exclusive ride time after the Park closed for the night, where we''d ''shoot'' the Blue Streak for several rounds in a row.

Moved to Texas in 1983, courtesy of the USAF. Been here 37 years. Sure, we have Six Flags, but in my opinion, it will never measure up to The Amazement Park. Once you''ve been to the best, you can forget the rest.

And now, to take a leisurely stroll through Cedar Point through H. John''s words and occasionally strap myself in and enjoy a ride on one of the roller coasters or other attractions. Can''t. Wait.

Five stars. Highly recommended.

As a friend of the author’s family I anxiously awaited the release of “Always Cedar Point.” It did not disappoint. While I am not a roller coaster enthusiast nor have ever visited Cedar Point, I could totally relate to the story John Hildebrandt shared about his career in marketing. Having spent a career marketing for a non-profit, I enjoyed John’s look-back at his career with its ups and downs and how business practices have evolved over the decades. However, some basic principles in managing a staff and marketing basics do not change. John did a masterful job in sharing his story — one we can all relate too.
Well-written, engaging, personal — this is a good read!

This book will certainly appeal to CP enthusiasts, amusement park enthusiasts, and former employees of CP. I was a seasonal employee in 1985 working on the Frontier Lift for it''s final season and consider that summer at CP the best summer and job ever! I was smiling the entire time I read this book. It brought back so many memories from my months there and I can''t say that I found anything that didn''t mirror my knowledge or experience while there. John tells all his stories with sincerity, integrity and honesty. This book is a true treasure!

My favorite story is how the park services managers used to take such pride in the cleanliness of the restrooms that they organized pre-season sleepovers IN THE RESTROOMS! If only the restroom floors were still clean enough to sleep on.

Every year, twice if we are lucky, we make the long trip from the French Quarter to Cedar Point. For many people it''s a tradition and a place so many of our memories are made. As I write this I can''t help but to feel how the Covid 19 is going to affect the park. I wonder how this author would be dealing with it or if he has been called for help. This book was a terrific read. I could feel the years go by as he describe the coasters that were built. You could tell he loved this pace, like so many of us do. If you are a fan of Cedar Point. read this book.

I loved this book, but I also love Cedar Point. Even though I live in New Jersey, some 500 miles away from Cedar Point, my son and I visited the park over SIXTY times from 1996 to 2007. Needless to say, we are roller coaster enthusiasts, and this book rekindled all of my great memories there. The author (who worked at the park for close to 40 years and was General Manager at one point) explains in great detail EVERYTHING about the park, from its wonderful history, to all of its amazing rides and roller coasters, and the great people who worked at Cedar Point and made it THE greatest amusement park in the world. And it''s written in a way that sends anyone who spent time at Cedar Point down a wonderful and nostalgic Memory Lane. I am almost done reading the book and I will be sad when I''ve completed it.

It made you appreciate so many details about the park that you may never think about, such as how do animals effect the maintenance. By far the best book on the market about Cedar point.
